Barb's Book Review... Bridged

After a congressman’s tortured body is found dangling from a Portland bridge, the FBI joins the Oregon State Police to investigate the case—and FBI Special Agent Ava McLane, still recovering from a bullet wound, hunts the twisted killer alongside the man who captured her heart, police detective Mason Callahan.
But once a third body appears and all evidence points to a serial killer, the public furiously clamors for answers—and the couple’s relationship grows fractured under the pressure. Ava and Mason search in the past for clues that predict the future. And when Ava’s mentally ill twin spins out of control, the FBI agent who battles monsters every day wonders if she shares her sister’s self-destructive streak…
In the latest thrilling romantic suspense novel from award-winning author Kendra Elliot, the past and the present violently collide…and the fallout can be deadly.
First off let me thank NetGalley, Montlake Romance and Kendra Elliot for providing me with an ARC of Bridge in exchange for an honest review. Bridged is the second book in the Mason Callahan series and … GAH!! I loved it... yeah like I ever doubted I wouldn’t!! Kendra fuels my love of serial killers in her books and I do truly love every word of them. Honestly her books are some of my favorites. I tell anyone that will listen to read them. (cheeky grin) This is an intense read. The human mind is such a fickle thing. My only problem now is… I have to wait for the next.. I hate waiting. LOL

**small spoiler alert**

Mason and Ava are back in the next installment of the Mason Callahan Series. A wake up call in the wee hours of the morning takes Mason and Ray to one of the Portland bridges. There is a body that was hung from the railing. Wrists slit, hands bound but according to Seth Rutledge (the chief medical examiner) he was dead before he was hung. As they look around its Ray who finally takes a good look at the man on the ground and recognizes him. Carson Scott. A congressman. Talk about a shock. Why was the congressman killed? Who did it? Was it political? Random? It was going to be a long day as they jump in and start meeting with people to deal with Carson Scott. His personal assistant comes in and talks to Ray and Mason and is adamant that Carson wasn’t dating anyone and has no idea why this could have happened. When the FBI is called in Mason and Ava are paired in the case along with the rest of their teams in order to find out who this killer is.

When Mason and Ava arrive home -to his house- its late after a long day of working and walk into a freezing house. Mason searches the house and sees the windows in the back door are broken out, there is a shelf in front of the doggy door and the dog -bingo- was locked in the back yard. As they search the house they find the big screen TV in Mason’s bedroom is gone along with the necklace Ava’s mother left her. Now what in the hell is going on? Bad enough Ava has no idea where her sister is? She hasn’t been to work in days and no one has any idea how to get a hold of her. They go about the rules and call the cops in. And settle in for another long night.

Twenty four hours later they received a call there is another body hanging from a bridge. The body is not anyone they have seen. He however does have a tatt on his calf. A dragon tatt, someone would know that tatt right? They put it out on the air and within hours they received a call. The man was Aaron King. An auto mechanic. After Ava and Xander talk to the dead man’s room mate and ex-wife Ava sets off to see if she can locate her sister Jane. But fails to. The apartment manager tells her she has been gone for a month. She just skipped out on the place. So she is back to square one. It threw a damper on her day but she had murders to deal with. That had to be her focus for now. As they meet with the BAU officer they set out a plan of action for what they need to do about the killer.

Again, the morning starts with them on a bridge. The third victim, a large man hung from The Bridge of the Gods… hopefully that's not a sign the killer has a God complex. Later they find out the identity of the third victim. Joe Upton, a lumber yard worker from Grandview, Washington. He was discovered to be missing by his boss when he didn’t show up for work. There was a lot of blood at his home. Why would the killer have left all of that blood in his house? It was an unexpected finding. Would they find the other two victims crime scenes? As the ordeal with the victims increases Ava and Mason try to focus on themselves for a bit. Mason wants her to move in permanently with him. He loves her, she loves him, but Ava isn’t sure if she wants to sell her condo. But then Mason has a moment of clarity… or whatever you want to call it. They could find a house of their won, this one meant nothing to him he just wanted her in his bed every night.

So, a plan of action in their personal lives is a good thing. But their good times are pushed back as they discover a connection between the three men. But then Ava gets a call from Jane.. one saying she is scared and of course she is upset. Saying her so called boyfriend was in trouble. He didn’t want to be the next one killed on a bridge. Her mind and his were crazy. Ava still searched for her but Ava wasn’t letting her craziness get to her. The strain of Ava looking for Jane is getting to Mason because she was keeping the searching for Jane from him.

When a lead comes in via Michael Brody Ava goes to investigate it. She does find Jane… and along with Jane she finds Derek, the druggy bad-ass Jane is with. Derek seeing Ava and knowing that she was an FBI agent pulls a knife on Jane. But then a stranger comes in the store and when Derek sees him he flees. Jane followed him out of the store. The crazy man that was there was after Derek but when he saw Ava something snapped in his mind. he knocked her out and kidnapped her out of the store. When Ava wakes up she is in a smelly room, covered in carpet and duct tape. As she took in her surroundings she scoots up against the wall and makes a plan. Her arms are bound but her legs and teeth would work just fine. There was a knock on the door… a knock? really? As she called out for them to come in a man came in not meeting her gaze, then he went out and brought Derek in. He told Derek it was time for him to pay now. And Ava was stuck there.. she would be made to watch what happened all because this crazy ass man thought she was a girl named Colleen that had been killed many years ago.

Seems Derek was always an asshole and instigated an attack on this girl one summer at camp. Raping her violently. A rock had been stuffed in her mouth, they had cut her wrists, but since her heart was no longer beating. Then they set her on fire which of course that didn’t work to get rid of the body. They cut her hair off.. making it so she would be hard to recognize. Then Derek had the bright idea to hang her from the bridge in the woods. Then as they watched the girls body swing from the bridge they make a blood pact to keep silent. As the voice in his head competes with Ava’s the craaaaazy gets a new plan. He thinks Ava -cause he thinks she is Colleen- wants him to do it a new way, again, cause he is crazy. He takes Derek and Ava with him to a bridge. He is going to hang Derek and then set him on fire.. alive. (shudders)

Thanks to some quick thinking on Ava’s part and the fact that the cops show up his plan is foiled but that doesn't mean he is going down without a fight. Snarky bastard is crazier than an ant hill on crack. As Mason and the others surround him he gets antsy. He has Mason on the road talking to him and Ava, up close and personal talking to him. Both of them again compete with the voice in his head. He decides to retreat. Shoving Ava back in the van, leaving Derek on the road and hauls ass. The swat team shoots out the vans tire and …. yep they go off the bridge into the water. Mason goes in after Ava and its a fight to get her away from Troy. He is determined that they need to die together.. but Mason isn’t letting the woman he loves go…

“You. In.” She pointed to the room behind me, and I glanced over my shoulder.

“In there?” I smirked again, but her cheeks didn’t get any redder, to my astonishment. “Is now really the time?”

She pushed against my naked chest, her steely eyes fixed on my face the whole time, then slammed the door behind us with her foot.

“If you wanted some private time together, you just had to say so.” I joked, leaning back against the chair that was positioned in front of the mirror in my dressing room.

“You think this is funny?” Kate asked, her head tilted to the side.

“Actually … yeah.” I nodded and smiled again, not unkindly.

Kate looked down, and for one God-awful moment I thought she was going to cry.

Then, she did something better than crying. Holy mother of crap sticks, was this better than crying.

She raised her hands to the top of her black button-up shirt—and she undid the top button. Creamy, white skin is exposed, defined collarbones, teasing my eyes down to—

She undid another button. Holy fuck, what was Kate doing? Her cleavage heaved in front of me, and I got a hint, just a hint of her black lacy bra.

“It cannot be a coincidence that one man is shirtless in front of me six times in two weeks.”

            I grinned. She’d counted.

That totally means she’s into it.

Then she did something that completely surprised me. Hell, it shocked the living daylight out of me. In one fluid movement, she grabbed the sides of her shirt and pulled, popping open her entire top and then shrugging it over her shoulders so she stood there in the world’s hottest black, lacy bra, skin-tight black denim jeans and these shoes—how the hell did I not notice them before?—that were red, high, and sexy as sin.

            I swallowed. “So … this is a revenge …” Swallow, “… strip?”

“This is me, trying to do something to get you to pay attention and listen when I ask you to do something.” Kate’s voice was honey as it melted into me.

I raised my hand to the back of my neck and rubbed at the muscles there that had suddenly become tight with tension. “Oh, I’m paying attention, all right.” I widened my eyes. There was absolutely no doubt about that right now.

“Get back stage, Lee. Seriously. This is your last warning.”

I swallowed again, and felt the clamminess of perspiration beading my brow. Was it hot in here? It sure felt hot.

She stepped close to me, till her chest was almost touching my chest. Shit, she smelt like soap and hairspray and … apples. Delicious.

“I …” My gaze flicked to her lips, and I wondered if it would really be that bad if I kissed her. After all, that wouldn’t be promising her marriage, and maybe she’d be up for a casual thing. And her lips—they were so red, and plump, and—oh God, she just licked them with that sweet-as-hell little tongue, and—

The palm of her hand made contact with my face before I even registered her arm moving. Five elegant fingers stung my cheek and I jerked backward, clutching my face in pain. “What the hell?”

Kate walked over to where her shirt lay on the floor and picked it up, casually shrugging it on. She had the biggest shit-eating grin on her face, and I couldn’t help but give a little smile myself. I’d not seen her look so animated since she first boarded the bus.

“I told you it was your final warning,” she said, doing up her buttons, then turned to the door, wrenching it open and making a sweeping gesture with her arm, allowing me passage through. “Now, Mr Collins, if you please.”

“Thanks,” I mumbled, walking past her and out into the corridor. I passed Xander’s door, and a thought flashed through my mind. What if she stripped for all the guys to get them on stage? I couldn’t have her just—

“Lee?” The voice halted me in my tracks. I spun to face her.
She threw my black shirt at me. “Put some clothes on.”

Barb's Book Review... Spark

Spark (Spark, #1)
Not many people know that I, Eevie Lawson, have a problem. An addiction to romance novels. I eat them for breakfast. I hide it the best I can, but I need them to breathe. It’s how I cope.
I’ve had a swag of book boyfriends, but now that I’m free from the responsibility of caring for my three younger brothers, it’s time to find one in the flesh.
In real life, no girl meets their hero on page one, or even at the end of chapter one. I should know.
My journey is real. It’s not perfect, and it sure as hell isn’t easy—but the fight for something worthwhile never is.

This is a new author and series for me. I was introduced to it months ago by my fiance. She loved the books so I added them to my ‘we must research’ stack. (Its a biiiig stack.. lol) But when I came across them again thanks to one of the PR groups I was like, “Okay, we shall read these next” and here we are. In this book we meet Eevie. A smart, sweet, out going but yet innocent girl who has a secret love for romance books. And her book boyfriends, well they are what keep her warm at night. (I think we can all attest to the book boyfriends… they are just yummy.)

**small spoiler alert**

Eevie has just moved out of her parent’s home and into a flat with her friend and flatmate Crystal. She has a small circle of friends but not the kind that only want to be around when it's convenient for them.. ya know, real friends. Just as her life starts to take on a life of its own her best friend, Jon, does something unexpected. It unnerves her a bit. He sends her flowers as a ‘housewarming gift’. Is that normal? Did friends send each other flowers? Is there more to this than what she thinks? Her friend Cassie thinks so. As a matter of fact so does her flatmate. But she pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind. When Jon asks her over for dinner the next night she starts to panic. They spend a lot of time together as it is but now it felt different. And she had every right to say it felt different. It was different. Jon tells her that he has feelings for her, that he has had feelings for the last couple of years. Ever since they met in college. Eevie is freaked the fuck out by this. Poor girl is so scared to do anything to lose him...but she wasn’t really having feelings for him. Sure she loves him but not in that way. So when she leaves his place its to take some time to think about what he had talked to her about.

Life for Eevie until she moved out could only be described as complete chaos. She had to help tend to her family of 6 when she was home. Her 3 younger brothers and her mother. Her father, when he was there so to say she grew up hard and fast would be putting it lightly. But she is a strong girl. She waited until she knew her mum could handle the three boys before she moved out. So on the heels of Jon’s revelation to her she goes to her parents home for a visit. Everyone seems to be doing well. I mean she’s only been out of the house for a month, that isn’t long at all. As Eevie takes time to think over what all has happened with her family, with Jon its like a towering tornado over her head. The next time she sees her mother she gets another dose of reality. Her mother is divorcing her father. She can’t live like this anymore. Eevie understands but its just a total shock. It throws her world into a tilt a whirl and sends her straight to the one person that knows her best, Jon.

He understands how Eevie is feeling as he went through this with his parents a year ago. But her emotions put her in a bad place… because she relies on him, needs Jon in her life and with all that is going on it’s overwhelming to think of losing him. Is she ready for a relationship with him. No but she agrees to try it. Its either try it or lose him. And right now she is being selfish.. but maybe it will work out. As the weeks go by Eevie and Jon have some nice times alone at his apartment. Dinners, movies, cuddling… its a nice, calm cycle but the feelings that should be there… they aren’t. There's a moment or two of passion after a night of drinking but that may have only been thanks to the alcohol. But then Eevie meets Crystal’s boyfriends’ mate Aiden and all sorts of feelings flood through her for the get go. The boy is like sex on legs so how could her very feminine body not react to him, right? I mean she is innocent, not dead. But the feelings make her feel guilty when she isn’t getting them from Jon. When she has a night out with Crystal, Leila and Brad (Crystal’s sister and her boy friend), Rob, Peter (a friend of Rob’s), Dean (a friend of Eevie  and Jon’s from college), and Aiden she sees there is more to him that meets the eye.

Aiden steps in when Dean, who was toasted, starts groping on her and not taking the hint to fuck off. But it doesn’t stop there. He walks her home, even though its just up the street. With it just being him and her he is a little different. Sweeter, more attentive. After that night the thoughts and feelings running through Eevie are all but consuming and consist of thoughts both naughty and nice of Aiden. She doesn’t see him again until a birthday party for Rob. Its a black, white and red themed party so she gets as sexy as she can. The new Eevie isn’t shy and she has been working her ass off to get herself back into good shape. That night the looks she gets and gives to Aiden spark something in them both. A strong presence surrounded them and the night started off a chain of emotions that made their minds play over and over for the feelings swirling around them both. As time passes the bond between them. Their relationship grows stronger.

It was as if Eevie and Aiden had finally found their soul mate. The days that they spent apart were hard but they made it work. Both promising to never go more than 10 days apart. Between her work and school schedule and his work and racing schedule and traveling they were desperate for each others touch as soon as they see each other. But its not like you can blame them. As they clung to their happy abyss their souls are almost as one. It had been a few days since They had seen each other, it was also the night of Eevie’s birthday party. As she looked around, greeting people, talking to everyone in her path she really was hoping Aiden would be able to make it. It was a busy weekend for him but a girl can hope right? Yes, and her wish is granted when he surprises her. She had her prince charming and he had his princess. Time apart was still an obstacle for them but they made it work. The time apart was good for them both, it only made their time together that much better.

The night of Crystal’s birthday get together changed things for a lot of people but especially for Eevie.  A girls night out. Eevie, Crystal and a few of the girls Crystal worked for all went out for dinner, drinks and a little fun. After dinner they went to a bar and just let go, having a couple of drinks and good conversation. Eevie was just killing time until Aiden arrived to whisk her away to his place for the weekend. Their ‘girls night’ was interrupted though when Dean a friend of Eevie’s from College and Crystal’s boyfriend showed up. It was odd, he was not a girl but he insisted on buying them drinks. they agreed and it was a bit odd to have him there, staring at Eevie. After finishing off her third drink Dean set out to get them another and Eevie was feeling hot and dizzy. She needed air.

She excused herself, telling Crystal she was going outside. The next thing she knows she is waking up, groggily to beeps and hearing Aiden say her name. She was in the hospital. Seems she was ‘attacked’ when she left the bar. Thankfully Aiden and Crystal had found her.. but she was unconscious on the ground and a man had been standing over her. they were testing to see if she had been raped but right now with what she could remember and what they knew of after it seemed Dean had attacked her. of course this turned Eevie’s world upside down, inside out and then tossed her into the fire. But thanks to Aiden she is able to stay strong and as they heal together from this event their love and need grows between them. its just a road bump they were able to get over it.

Since that time they had rotated between her apartment and his apartment. they just couldn’t get enough of their life together. The love they share is strong, unyielding and will only get stronger. They have a live that we all want. And some of us are lucky enough to have.

Barb's Book Review... Vanished

 Vanished (Mason Callahan, #1)
When eleven-year-old Henley Fairbanks is abducted on her way to school, the FBI doesn’t waste a moment, sending agents to scour the area and embedding Special Agent Ava McLane with the distraught family. In the eye of the storm is local detective Mason Callahan, who also happens to be related to Henley. To make matters worse for Mason, the kidnapping comes on the heels of the murder of his longtime confidential informant, and he’s been sidelined from the investigation. Now both he and Agent McLane are holed up in the Fairbanks’ home, along with Callahan’s ex-wife, Robin. Every second counts in a kidnapping case, and the stakes keep rising the longer Henley stays missing. As Ava and Mason struggle to hold the Fairbanks family together in their darkest hour, the two investigators find themselves more and more drawn to each other.

I finished this one fast.… what can I say? I frigging loved this book. As usual Kendra has outdone herself. The characters already felt familiar since most of them had been in previous works and I was giddy to see Brynn and the SARs team was pulled in to this one as well. The story hits a sore spot in some peoples hearts I would assume -I know it did in mine- because no one wants to ever know what its like to lose a child at the hands of a crazy person. No matter the underlying reasoning. I loved the dynamics between Mason and Ava. If was as if they were drawn to each other. Soul mates maybe? God, I hope so.

As with the other books of Kendra’s I mixed this with reading parts on my kindle and the other was done via audio book. The narrators for this series Nailed it. Nick did a spectacular job. And Amy was just as wonderful. Their voices helped to make this story feel real as I listened to it.

***small spoiler alert***

Mason Callahan and Ray Lusco are back at it again. Callahan gets a frantic call from his ex-wife, Robin, as he leaves a crime scene. A crime scene of his long time confidential informant So his already shitty day takes another nose dive. Robin’s step-daughter Henley has gone missing. Henley is the daughter of his exes husband. Their family is one of those, yours, mine and ours type. Henley went missing sometime between leaving Robin and her father's house and the bus stop or the school. At this time its unsure. They just know she didn't arrive at the school. thanks to the absentee messages that were sent out to her mother. Mason hauls himself to their home to see if he can help. Not only is he worried for the child but he is worried about how this will effect his son, Jake, Henley’s older step-brother.

When FBI Special agent Ava McLane arrives at the Fairbanks home she jumps right in. At the end of the family interview she is assigned to stay at the family home in case she is needed. its a bit of a stretch for her as she is frothing at the mouth to get out in the field and help find Henley. Mason -as a member of the family- assigns himself as the families liaison to the FBI and the investigation itself. Having him there will make sure that at all times the family is updated and they get the right questions asked. As the case progresses the family members are questioned again as individuals. Just to make sure there was nothing missed. As if Callahan doesn’t have enough on his plate things from his CI’s death come up and it seems he may be implicated in her murder.

The kidnapping, Mason’s CI’s death and the stress his family is under is all building up in Mason and he doesn’t have an outlet for it. He is trying to stay strong for everyone and put on a brave face but the only that has caught a glimpse of him not being okay is Special Agent McLane. But he pushes that away and plays it off. Then atop all of this things in Mason’s CI’s murder case has mounting evidence against him. Someone is setting him up. but who and why? Not only are his prints inside her apartment they are on the bat that was used to kill her. As the case grows with the CI’s case the hunt for Henley increases. Small things start to build into the larger things.

Seems someone in Mason’s past or present is after him. Does this have to do anything with Henley’s case? Would there be someone that would use Henley to get to Mason? She wasn’t his kid. How could it be? As the CI’s death case builds Mason is taken off the roster. His commanding officer takes his badge and gun, placing him on administrative leave. There was too much evidence against him. Though no one really believes him to be the killer, but its what has to be done. As the family tries to focus on keeping themselves sane the FBI and Mason put in as much time as they can into finding Henley’s kidnapper. Praying the little girl is safe. As another night passes Ava gets a call… they found bloodied clothes at a rest stop off the interstate.

Ava and Mason both joined the other FI agents and forensics teams at the rest stop and after going back and talking to the mothers, they find out it looks like Henley’s. And there was blood on it. What had happened to her? By Christmas eve, things had changed. The kidnapper sent in a note with GPS coordinates for them to find Henley. Ava, Mason and most of the FBI head to the national forest where they met the SARs team. Brynn -who is a nurse and a SARs volunteer- is teamed with Mason, Ava and one other officer and they set out in teams. Heading off in the areas leading towards the coordinates they had received. As they searched they called out for the child, then barking caught their attention. They raced towards it and were rewarded by finding Mason’s dog and Henley. The little girl was wrapped up in clothes and the dog had been laying with her to keep her warm.

As they carry the girl down the hills towards their cars Henley wakes up in an officers arms. When she seems Mason he talks to her, reminding her that he was Jake’s dad. The little girl hands him a note she was left with. Panicked as she tosses it to him. Its a note that makes his heart race. The kidnapper is going to take the one thing that means the most to him.. there is only one thing that could be. His son. The crazed kidnapper was going after Jake. As they race down the road Mason is finally able to get a signal and reaches Robin. They’ve already been notified that they found Henley but as they celebrate one miracle they discover Jake is missing from his room. He left a note he is at his girlfriend Miranda’s. As Mason and Ava haul ass over there the worst possible thoughts run through Mason’s head. This psycho has been after him all this time. Each thing that has happened over the last few days. Again, the question is… why?

When they arrive at Miranda’s they find that she had been tied up and the kidnapper had been there to ambush Jake. As Miranda tells Mason, Ava and the other officers what happened he gets a phone call. When Mason answers it.. its the kidnapper. With a few words said to him by the kidnapper Mason not only knows where the man is with Jake but who it is. His past has definitely come back to beat down his door. An incident with a crazy man in a grocery store now has Mason racing to save his son… and pray its not too late.

So now what’s next? Oh you know I am so headed to read Bridged. HA! Same narrators on the audio book as well.. it should be an awesome ride!

Until next time, keep the pages turnin’!
