Barb's Book Review... Dark Descendant

Dark Descendant (Nikki Glass, #1)

From the acclaimed author of the Morgan Kingsley, Exorcist books comes the gripping first novel in a new series about a private eye who discovers, to her surprise, that she’s an immortal huntress.

Nikki Glass can track down any man. But when her latest client turns out to be a true descendant of Hades, Nikki now discovers she can’t die. . . .

Crazy as it sounds, Nikki’s manhunting skills are literally god-given. She’s a living, breathing descendant of Artemis who has stepped right into a trap set by the children of the gods. Nikki’s new “friends” include a descendant of Eros, who uses sex as a weapon; a descendant of Loki, whose tricks are no laughing matter; and a half-mad descendant of Kali who thinks she’s a spy.

But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. In the eternal battle of good god/bad god, Nikki would make a divine weapon. But if they think she’ll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy. . . .

***Small Spoiler Alert***

I have to say I absolutely LOVED this book! I went into this completely blind. Which is the best way to go into a new series. Nikki Glass and the characters in this series are like none that I have read before. That in itself is a great thing. Though after reading the lists of who these people are descendants of has awoken my inner geek. I really have an urge to do some serious research into these gods and ancestors of theirs. (LOL) Needless to say this is going to be one of those series that are more than memorable for a long time to come.

Nikki Glass, private investigator extraordinaire is called out to help with a client’s case. One that she had been working on for weeks now. Emmett was going to get someone he was trying to get away from a ‘cult’ and wanted Nikki’s help. And.. she went. But what she didn’t expect was the weather to cover the roads in ice. By the time she gets to where she is supposed to meet Emmett its too late to stop. Her car skids, she hits Emmett and then a tree. When she comes to her senses she climbs out of the car, painfully and makes her way to Emmett… yeah he was dead. His broken body lay sprawled across the side of the road. When three people come down the drive she thinks its help coming but all that gets her is taken into a house and locked in a room.

What Nikki finds out about herself in that room -to say the least- was craaaazy. Apparently Nikki is a descendant of Artemis; Goddess of the Hunt. Now that she had ‘killed’ Emmett she had taken in his power of immortality making her a Liberi. (Who needs titles, right?) Since she is a descendant she was one of the few that could actually kill him. Nikki being the level headed girl that she is thinks these crazies are just.. well crazy. Her glyph that is now visible along with the newest one she has prove her lineage. To say she is a bit freaked out is to say something but again she pushes this away. There is no way these stories are true. When Nikki was let out of her prison by one of the crazies (Jack a descendant of Loki)… she knows there is more to this than before. She leaves her house and checks into a hotel. She can’t be there if they know where she lives. Not that one group of crazies should worry her, right? Bwahaha… apparently Nikki is just a biiiiiig magnet for crazies because another one, one she hasn’t ‘investigated’ finds her. (laughs) A snooty one at that.

As the asshole, Alexis, and Nikki go into the diner to get a cup of coffee she gets a feeling he gets into a temperamental mood. Of Course Nikki doesn’t take his shit. As thing progressed and Alexis’ pissiness grows Blake shows up… and things get a little... uncomfortable between Blake and Alexis. A face off between the two makes Blake's powers flare. Seems he is a descendant of Eros…. sex is what he uses to get what he wants. Pushing his lust out he made a point of showing Alexis he was not one to play around with. The fact that sex can be a weapon is a bit hard for Nikki to follow. Not only was he here, he was there to take her to see Anderson. She would be safe there… hopefully.  But as with all good acts of kindness Nikki isn’t having it. She doesn’t want to go to the compound.

Nikki manages to escape Blake and hides in a parking garage... but Blakes right on her heels. She manages to hide for him until he has Anderson call her cell phone. And.. it gives her away.. (AND She is a badass… I mean.. her phone’s ringtone is Bad to the Bone… need I say more!!) Blake slaps her with a wave of his lust and it dazes her a minute to get herself out of it and she fires her gun. Hitting Blake in the chest and she runs. She has to check out of her hotel and find a safe place, again. The next day after more missed calls from her sister Nikki calls Steph and of course that over protective older sister tone is used. They agree to meet for dinner and Nikki tries to smooth things over. All is going well until Steph gets a call on her cell for Nikki from... Alexis. Needless to Nikki is not happy to have to deal with him. But he convinces her to meet with Constantine the next day. Of course he uses the only leverage he has over her… Steph. That only pisses Nikki off more. (You’d think by now these assholes would know she doesn’t cower when threatened. She fights back. Just ask Blake… LOL)

The meeting with Konstantin went as well as expected… but the fact that Nikki has to find a way to protect her sister. Constantine wants Nikki to work for him. He really didn't give her a choice. It was do this or your sister will get hurt. So.. what can she do now? Call Anderson.. its really the only thing to do. She can’t possibly do this alone and as it is.. she is weary. Can she trust either group? No but Anderson is her best bet at the moment. Hopefully she isn’t jumping into the fire pit. After dinner with Anderson she gave into his agreement of help. She would have to move into his home and he would do whatever he could to protect her and her sister.. with one more condition. Nikki needs to agree to find Anderson’s missing wife, Emma. She has been missing for 10 years.. and there was a chance she was not alive but he needed to know. So... after moving her things from her hotel to the mansion the race was on to find Emma. When he sister’s charity event came up there was no way to get out of it so.. she was going. It wasn’t going to be a favorite of hers but she would do it for her sister. The night came and as she came in she found Blake was with her sister. He was there to ‘watch over her’... not that Nikki was okay with this but she let it be.

As the evening went on Nikki lost sight of her sister. She was not in the ballroom.. neither was Blake. Where in the hell was she? Then moments later her cell phone rings. It’s Alexis… he has her sister. She had 30 minutes to get to a destination he ordered her to. If she isn’t there... he would hurt Stephanie.  She begged for more time so he gave her a few minutes longer then hung up and ran to her car. But, as if with anything else its not that simple. Jamal is waiting on her. And he pounces. Of course the fact that she has only so much time to get to her sister so this is not something she can do. He won’t listen to reason. He’s beyond himself with anger. The fight between them grows and they literally beat the shit out of each other. Nikki had to fight dirty. It was the only way to get out of here and get to D.C. to save Steph. Using a stiletto as a weapon she is able to get into her car and away from Jamal to speed off towards D.C.. As she drove she calls Anderson and tells him where Steph is. Then tells him about Jamal.

By the time she gets to the address she is well passed the time she was supposed to be there. As she parks she sees Alexis running out of the house like his ass is on fire. When she busts inside she finds Blake leaning over her sisters naked, beaten body. Seems the assholes had locked Blake in the bathroom in order to steal her. Now… they would have to tell Steph what was actually going on. They would have to take her to the mansion where she would be safe. Jamal was to be punished starting the next night at sunset. This was after the tribunal of the homes residence. He was to be executed for the next three nights. As an immortal they could die, but would be resurrected. So pain was a part of it but the more he suffered the better for him. It would show how much he was trying to get back into their good graces.

As Nikki went on about her research of the Olympian’s properties she starts to put a few pieces together about her so called power. Maybe the moon was where her power was. So night time hunting would maybe work… and so far it seemed to work. She has it narrowed down to Alexis’ property. When she does some scouting Nikki is drawn to a small pond in his yard. She knows she is in there. Nikki calls Anderson for help and when he arrives -alone- she freaks out. But they have work to do. They need to get in the pond and save Emma. But as they search Alexis and one of his goons attack. They take Anderson as a prisoner but that quickly turns out to be the wrong thing to do. Once Alexis and his goons are dead, they rescue Emma. There would be a long time for her to recover. She had been through so much in the last ten years. Nikki knew now that there would be so much more pain and death in the future. Her new life was just now really getting started. There was so much to deal with. Emotions, fears, and any number of things that she could foresee.
