Barb's Book Review... Deadly Descendant

Deadly Descendant (Nikki Glass, #2)

An ancient evil is unleashed in the modern world-- unless one fearless P.I. can hunt it down. . . . Nikki Glass, Immortal Huntress, returns in this new novel in the acclaimed series by Jenna Black.

As a living descendant of Artemis the Huntress, private investigator Nikki Glass knows how to track someone down. But when an Oracle shows up, warning the Descendants about wild dog attacks in Washington, D.C., Nikki is afraid it might be a trap. The Olympians believe the "dogs" are really jackals, controlled by a blood-crazed descendant of the Egyptian death-god Anubis.

Whatever. . . . If Nikki hopes to muzzle Dogboy, she's got to catch him in the act. But when she stakes out a local cemetery, she ends up face-to-snout with a snarling pack of shadow-jackals whose bite is worse than their bark. These hellhounds are deadly--even for an immortal like Nikki. "Dog" spelled backward may be "god," but that won't stop Nikki from teaching these old gods some new tricks. Like playing dead.

This was the second book in this series and I looooved it. I think the dynamic between the characters is epic. And OMG the relationship, well the anger, uncertainty and sexual tension between Jamal and Nikki grows and grows. They are two of my favorite characters. To say I would be love to see them actually together would be putting it lightly. (laughs) They are so much alike.. it would be perfection.

*** small spoiler alert***

Nikki is still staying with Anderson Cain, son of Thanatos and Alecto is not only a man that keeps watch over them but he is a God. One that can kill any Liberi… with his ungodly powers. A formidable opponent to anyone. He scares the mess out of her but she has to try and deal with that. And as he comes to her now with a job opportunity she isn’t really in a place to say no. Anderson isn’t one ot take no for an answer as it is. He wants her to look over all of his files he has on the Liberi people and families he has put into hiding to keep the Olympians from killing. As she searches the files she finds a few small things that are easily fixed but nothing out of the way.

Then they are all called to the family room for a meeting. The Olympians… The Oracle has had a vision of a man with a jackals head in the possession of the US Army. Seems a pack of wild dogs has killed 3 men, on 3 separate days in 3 different areas. Nikki starts to look through the police files and anything else she can find. There wasn’t anything that popped out at her yet. But after visiting each of the three murder sights with Jamal as backup the few things that they could piece together started to make sense. Each of the murders, as random as they seem all happen by a cemetery. So Nikki, being the slooth she is sets out to pinpoint more. And she does. Using a map she plots the spots of their deaths/attacks. It seems to be a pattern. Once she talks to Anderson the entire house of Leberi go out hunting. The cemetery is so big they all have to split up. Jamal and Nikki are again teamed up and as they hunt, hours pass.

Jamal is having a bit of uneasiness with being surrounded by the cemetery and death. He flips out and walks away from her. A bit later just as Nikki looks around she sees someone running towards her. She doesn’t see anyone chasing him but she hears his foot steps.. then it happens. A small coyote sized animal poofs into existence and attacks. The man is covered in them moments later. Nikki takes a couple of them out with her gun but then their handler -a liberi- turns them on her. By the time Jamal shows back up her isn’t.. himself. The man controlling the jackals as they find out, pulls them away and poofs. Jamal kills the man the jackals had attacked and collapses. Nikki is left on the ground in extreme pain and fighting to stay conscious. She gets her cell and calls Anderson for help and thankfully they get to her fast enough.

When they get everyone home, Nikki notices she is still not healing. And it had been hours since her attack. Maggie helps her clean up and get into bed. She is running a fever and not healing. Still the next morning she is no better, she is actually worse. Hours, days maybe even pass before a healer is brought in. Nikki has had to be restrained because of hallucinations. As the healer looks her over… she finds out that she has rabies. (makes a face) And not the normal kind of rabies. Its something supernatural…. and there is nothing the healer -Erin- can do for her it seems. Rabies would kill her.. but even if she dies and comes back her body would still have rabies.. A fate worse than death. She’d be on repeat of misery forever. But how can they keep her from that happening. Then they have an idea. If they burn the body.. it should get rid of the disease and her body would be able to regenerate.

Of course Nikki is not a fan of this idea. What happened if it didn’t work? Anderson though assures her that her body would regenerate and she should be fine… then Anderson talks to her, calming her down and does the unthinkable. He breaks her neck. When she wakes she is pissy but alive and cured. Her body had taken four days to heal but she was back to herself. Tired and her body needed more rest but she would be fine. Nikki being the stubborn woman that she is, is ready to get back to working. They only have a couple of days until its Friday again. They have to figure out who is killing these people and why. When Nikki goes back to working… she finally starts piecing this puzzle together. The men that were killed all had a few similarities. Olive skin, dark beards and athletic bodies. But that wasn’t all.. they all resemble Konstantin. That meant that the Olympians know more than they are telling them. Someone knows who this ass is and what he wants.. but they need to figure out who and why. And what the Olympian’s know.

When Anderson calls a meeting with the Oracle -of course she comes with back up- Blake, Nikki and he question her. They need more answers. And they get them. With Blake's help, of course,  -which means he uses his magic on them- and the Oracle confesses. They made the man out there doing the hunting. The part that he is killing humans is just the start. He is crazed and on a path to destruction. And as Nikki knows he isn’t playing. SO, they go back to hunting and… it seems the ass is on a mission to now kill all the Olympians. If they attempt to stop him he will start killing humans again. And of course there is no way to let him kill them, even if they are Olympians. Emma of course is all for letting him kill them all off. But after what they did to her I don’t blame her. Nikki quickly makes a plan to go after the bad guy no matter what Emma wants.

After the days of Nikki’s attack the tension between Nikki and Jamal grow more. The tension is a mix of anger, lust (I’m sure on both their parts) and need. Nikki wants to help Jamal deal with his death magic. But as usual he is being an ass. Macho Alpha males. He doesn’t want her help… but Nikki is not one to take no for an answer. She starts in some research for Kali. Maybe she can find something about Kali that will help her help him. As if Nikki doesn’t have enough to deal with Emma is on her ass. She ‘hates’ her and there is no reason for it. So now, Emma is making out that Nikki is ‘out to get her’. But we all know Emma is a wee bit cray cray. (laughs hard) Bitch is a few nuggets shy of a happy meal for sure.

Nikki and Jamal have to bring one more person into this plan… Jack. They need the trickster to be able to use his illusions to make it look like they have Konstantine in their custody. Its a way to bring Kerner to them. As they head towards the cemetery Nikki starts to zone out and then finds she is being drawn in a different direction than where she was headed. When they cross the DC line into Maryland they stop a little ways away so they can get the Konstantine look alike -aka Jack- from the trunk and head into the cemeteries. After walking around like loons they come across a man in the shadows. Was it Kerner? Oh hell no. It was Anderson. (snorts) And boy was he ten shades of pissed off.

But as he questions them they are surrounded by Jackals. Then all hell breaks lose. The Jackals attack and Nikki starts shooting. Kerner of course since he is still hiding behind the trees takes off. Jamal starts to try and do some death magic of his own. And after a bit of fighting time passes.. Jamal does it. A big ass Tiger manifests and the Jackals start to become its prey. Between Jack and Nikki Jamal stays safe but he is injured anyway. As is Jack. Nikki though runs after Kerner. Following him into the void of a portal he tries to use to escape them all. By the time Nikki stops falling she is face first on a floor.. but where? Where was Kerner? She sets off into the dark tunnel following his blood trail. And when she finds him… she is surrounded by Jackals. Finally they make a small agreement to be civil for now.

Nikki is in the ever after.. and stuck. The only way to get out is with Kerner’s help. So, for now she is stuck following him through the underground world. After a fight between Kerner and Nikki, he is laying on the ground dead and now.. how would she get you? Then a voice sounds behind her. Anderson followed her down. I mean he is a death God after all. So he helps her out and takes her home to the mansion. When they arrive you would think they were all asleep… but that isn’t true. Emma, her crazy ass is sitting on the porch waiting for them. Cyrus - Konstantine’s son- is standing there with a knife to Blake’s neck. Emma apparently called him (Cyrus) to come and get her. Seems Konstantine has taken off on the run and Cyrus is now in charge. Emma threatens Nikki, and finally Anderson sees her for what she is. And carries her bag to Cyrus’s car. (Least the mccrazy biotch is But something tells me… she isn’t done with Nikki yet.
