Barb's Book Review... Irresistible Force

Irresistible Force (K-9 Rescue, #1)
When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire…

For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep.

Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

I have to say first that I am sooooo glad I found this novel on audible. I hadn’t been looking for it it was just there saying “pick me, pick me” and so I did. I mean, can I ever say no to a book.. ugh no. So I got it in both audio and e-book and absolutely LOVED it. 4.5 stars of awesomeness. I even listened to it twice this week. I wanted to make sure I had it all together in my head! But again, frigging love it. I am very anxious to add the next installment to my TBR. The 31st can’t get here fast enough for me!!

***small spoiler alert***

Four weeks ago Shay Appleton’s life changed. She lost a psycho boyfriend, rescued a dog from the shelter that she volunteered at and decided to move on with her life. But what she didn’t know was the dog she now called Prince was a highly trained K-9 Police dog. The dog’s partner, James Cannon follows lead after lead that leads him to her door, literally. Of course she is not at all happy with this big man in her home saying her dog is his. The anger and fear that built up in her had Shay not backing dog, even so to call the police from her cell phone. But as they found out when the sheriff’’s deputy showed up, the dog, Bogart was James’ police dog. There was no way around it. Needless to say, Shay was not in any way happy about this. She had taken him in and was now losing him to this man.

As James left the Sheriff’s office he made an off the hand stop back at Shay’s house. He didn’t know why… he was just drawn back there. But when he arrived he saw a familiar vehicle in the yard and Bogart went crazy in the seat harness he was strapped into. Someone was here and it meant trouble. As Bogart and James made it into the house they found Shay being man handled by Eric, her ex-boyfriend, slash asshole. He was cocky and arrogant as usual until he figured out that Bogart would eat him for dinner and that James was a cop. But that arrogance came back when Eric decided that Shay was sleeping with James. (shakes my head) Men are idiots. I swear. Shay invited James to stay for dinner and also offered his shower to him. Since he slept in the woods the night before he needed it. After a shower and a good meal tings between them heated up. But they turned deathly cold in the middle of the night when Shay woke from a dream, screaming.

When Shay figured out she was safe, in her room, she panicked and pushed James out. He had to leave. She didn’t want him there anymore. James and Bogart went home and James pondered what in the hell happened. He went back to work and filled out all of the paperwork on Bogart’s ‘kidnapping’ and then went to see his ex. A local TV news person. A celebrity. A real douche but eh. Beauty queens, what can ya do. When Jaelynn saw him she was happy but then she saw Bogart. And the tension between the two grew. James made it known she could be in a lot of trouble for trying to have a police service dog killed. (she is blonde after all... ) Well this did not go over well.

When James and Bogart were sent to a training center for a refresher course outside of Raleigh that meant he would be able to swoop in and see Shay. But he had to do a little looking. But thanks to her friend Angie at the company she worked for he found her. Shay was so surprised to see Bogart and James standing outside the bank where she was temping when she walked out. After the day she had, she needed to feel close to someone that meant she would be safe. She knew she was safe with James and Bogart at her side. After a nice dinner out, they all went back to Shay’s apartment. Small, quaint even it was home for her. They spent the evening talking. Shay let him in on some of the things he was curious about. The painful remembrance of her youth made a part of James grew with anger. He hated to see her hurting, and to know what she had been through already.

After spending the night together they were in a better place. And spending the weekend together, relaxing and being more like a couple definitely helped. After a surprise ‘gift’ left by Eric James tried to convince her to get a restraining order against him. His obsessiveness was getting out of hand. And Officer Cannon was not having any of it. (Gotta love a hot blooded man when it comes to his woman.. alpha males do not share, ever) Then Monday happened. The week was going to be tough. Both James and Bogart had their training and wouldn't be back until Friday evening after the training program was done. Shay however did get a small bit of good news when James called her a little after leaving her place. Eric would be out of the bank this week, at some conference so she would be able to go in, work and not have to deal with him. However hours later after pressing the wrong extension on the phone panel she learned he was in the bank. And he made it clear he was not happy with her when she came back from lunch. He escorted her to a top floor where he determined he was going to get from her what he wanted. Sex. Shay put a stop to that and managed to get away from him. A decision forming in her mind and the next day she went to the bank manager. Telling him everything Eric had done against the bank and about the sexual harassment from Eric.

This started a roller coaster of emotions to run through her but it was time she took up for herself. She was excused from that job but her boss was only upset that she hadn't said anything before now. Even offered her and in house job until it was all settled. That night she and two of her coworkers went out, had a little food, a little drink and her night was ending okay, until she got home. A man that she spied walking around where her apartment was tossed the neighbors cat under her tie and well… we have a cat pancake. This upset Shay and the neighbors around that had come out to see what was wrong. Just another strike against her. But a couple of hours later when a deputy showed up at her door she thought the cat incident had gotten more unwanted attention.. but that wasn’t it. She had been served. Seems Jaelynn wasn’t taking her good name being tarnished by lies. Though nothing had been started yet the little heffa was in the wrong and wanted to get a head start making it look like Shay and James were working some big scheme to get her. Drama queens.

Shay, needing a break from all the crap that had been piled up on her this week, she packs a bag and high tails it towards the cabin in the woods. She needs the fresh air and time to get her mind in gear. Once she stopped and got enough food for the weekend for her and James, since she was making him figure out where she was, she headed into the cabin. But… she was not alone. A man lay in wait for her. There is no way for Shay to got away at first. But she is a tough girl and she does fight back, determination the driving force behind her escape. And maybe a little fire, but eh, it helped her get away. And into the woods she ran. She at least knew the lay of the land some. And when she thought she found a perfect hiding place… well her world came crashing down on her.

But never fear, James and Bogart find her. But not before they take down the bad man after her. Its finally over. And they as a couple can move on and face anything that is in their paths. Nothing is as good as a man and his dog… well except maybe them being all yours.
