Barb's Book Review... Open Minds

Open Minds (Mindjack Trilogy, #1)
When everyone reads minds, a secret is a dangerous thing to keep.

Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can’t read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can’t be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves. When she accidentally controls Raf’s mind and nearly kills him, Kira tries to hide her frightening new ability from her family and an increasingly suspicious Raf. But lies tangle around her, and she’s dragged deep into a hidden world of mindjackers, where having to mind control everyone she loves is just the beginning of the deadly choices before her.

This is a book I found through Amazon, it looked interesting. Its by an author I wasn’t familiar with and at the time it was free so I figured I’d give it a shot. Ya never know.. and then I was able to get it on audio-book… Man was that a good choice on my part. I was hooked from page one, or from word one I should say. Literally! The world is new and different.. and I have read young adult before but science fiction is new for me. The characters, the storyline itself is epic. (To me) I mean really who wouldn’t love to eff with peoples minds and not have them know it? I’d pay for that talent. (laughs)

***small spoiler alert***

Kira Moore is a 16 year old zero. What does that mean? Well in the world of readers it means she is at the bottom of the food chain. She isn’t like everyone else. She can’t read minds like everyone else can. She’s different. Zero’s are looked down on for that reason. Her best friend Raf though, he doesn’t care. he spends as much time with her as he can. Speaking out loud to her, showing that it doesn't bother him. It’s sweet. The boy has it hard for her but she has it hard for him as well. The problem is she doesn’t think she is good enough for him. During a study period Raf has had enough of this patience thing and makes him move. Kira freaks out because he tries to kiss her. That’s also the moment when Kira’s life would change and she never saw it coming.

Using her mind, using a power she never knew she had Kira stopped Raf from kissing her. She literally knocked him on his ass with her mind. (snorts) It was a scary moment but without knowing it she managed to wake him back up. Things start to spiral from there. Kira feels like an even bigger ‘freak’ then she did before. She is scared to be around her mom, her classmates, especially Raf in case it happens again. I can’t blame her though, she has a right to freak out. It isn’t until a boy a school named Simon pulls her aside and tells her why she is different. She is a ‘Jacker’. She can jump in peoples minds, plant thoughts, take thoughts.. she is basically a brain hacker. Freaky crazy but would leave anyone going O.O or at least me. Talk about a cool skill. That is if its used right. But as with anything of this nature Kira knows to be leery. Even if that doesn't last long. She is determined, now more than ever, to stay away from Raf. To protect him. See Readers have a helluva time keeping secrets. When your mind is an open book, literally, for any other reader its hard to hide things.

So as they develop a friendship they grow closer. Simon constantly at Kira’s side, pushing her to use her abilities, develop them. But what she doesn't know is why he is doing this. That is until she meets the shop teacher… who is much more than a teacher. He is a clan leader. A recruiter to be exact. They (the clan) want Kira to be a part of their society. Of course they are not law abiding but she doesn’t learn that until she is face to face with their leader. And his croonies. Its also there in that place that she realizes just how different she is, even from other Jackers. Kira’s mind is not so easy to get into. Matter of fact no one can get into it. Its like she has a wall up that taunts them. It intrigues them but also makes them leery of her. But not long after meeting these people she is forced to chose a side. Raf is caught spying on their meeting (he apparently followed her and Simon there). The leader orders Simon to kill Raf. Now Kira has to decide if she is to choose evil (aka the clan’s side) or does she choose what's right to do. She chooses to do good. Kira uses her mojo to knock them all out. Like dominoes they fall and she and Raf get the hell out of there. But.. things are never that easy. They are soon out run by the FBI.

Now, I get the FBI are assholes but sheesh. They treat her like she is the gum on the bottom of your shoe. The dude tells her she is not in jail (a camp for jackers in the desert) only because of who her father is. I guess since he is military and all they are playing ‘nice’. Kira doesn’t like the sounds of that load of crap any more than I did. She decides to ‘escape’ but that fails to happen. She did try her best though. LOL So the FBi fella is ten shades of pissy now and decides she needs jail since she wont work with or for them. The next thing she knows she is in the back of a truck. When the truck stops the doors open and Simon is standing there. needless to say they are both shocked but that quickly clears away and Simon gets her and the other girl in the truck (Laney) out of there and into a hiding place. This prison camp is a very, very bad place. Its dangerous and out of control.

When Simon goes to the leader of their clan, of course he;s not happy that she is there. None of them trust her but then again, can ya blame them? She did knock their asses out. (snickers) But after a while there a ‘trust’ of sorts starts to grow. Kira has had to prove herself to these jackholes and in the process Laney was taken out of the camp by the FBI. to have God only knows what done to her. A plan is made and its up to Kira and Simon to escape using her powers to aid them in the process. Its like Alcatraz, with the exception of freezing water and strong currents they are fighting knock out gas and boiling heat. Oh yeah, and bullets. (laughs) Well Kira makes it out.. but not Simon. All she can do is run now or its all for a loss. And run she does. After a bit of time she walks into the news studio and finds Maria.

The reporter thinks she is a quack at first but once Kira ‘shows’ her what she can do things fall into place. Kira gets the location of the FBI asshat that put her in jail and then has fun. Using his own dart gun on him so she can jack him to get the location of where Laney is. She does rescue the girl along with the other kids she finds in there but it comes to a standoff in the lobby of the hospital between her, the kids and the FBI. (Fucking Bullheaded Idiots) HA! So with some quick thinking on her part Kira turns the camera on her cell phone on and send the live video to Maria. Needless to say the FBI fucks off and the kids are all taken to Maria’s office. I mean where else do you go when you are running from the ‘good guys’? You go where you will be safe.

Things start to trickle into place for not only Kira but the other children whom she saved. Their families (who had been made to think they had run away with some kind of brain manipulation) were more than willing to get their kids back. All but one mom, but that was okay. Kira took him home with her. At least he would be safe and in a place of comfort. He needed that, hell they all did. Things at home for Kira were strange at first. She wanted to run off and track down the others from the camp but all in due time. Her father (who quit his job as soon as he saw exactly what the military and FBI were doing) is here to help her. THey will figure a way to get the ones that were taken (the innocent children at least) out and away from the bad men.

I can’t wait for the next book.. you can bet ya butt I will diving into that one in a day or so!!
