Barb's Book Review... Torrent

She sent an innocent man to prison. Now, eight years later, he's returning the favor...

I’ve been obsessed with Rafe Mason since I was thirteen. The twisted part of this story is that I still want him, even now.

Now that he's holding me captive on an island.

Rafe has his reasons for doing what he's doing, and if I'm honest, I can't blame him. I’m the girl who sent him to prison for a heinous crime he didn't commit.

But now he's free and the tables have he's the one driven by obsession.

TORRENT is a new adult dark romance with disturbing themes and explicit content, including sexual scenes and violence that may offend some. Intended for mature audiences. Part one of the CONDEMNED series. This is not a stand-alone read. Approximately 43,000 words.

Well I am happy to say this is a new author and series for me. I purchased this book when it was released.. and yes I am just now getting to it. Not that I didn’t want to read it but I wanted to wait until the series was complete because… I knew it was going to be kick-ass! And, I am happy to say the moment I opened it I was hooked. I love dark storylines. You just don't see a lot of good ones at times. Gemma James is a genius and I have to say her dark side is scary with a side "hell yes, do it again." This book broaches subjects and actions that may not be suitable for all audiences. This is definitely and 18+ book and not for anyone with a weak stomach! But for me, I effing LOVED it!

***small spoiler alert***

Sweet, naive, silent Lex is being tormented by her step-brother Zach. Tormenting goes all kinds of twisted ways. She wants him to leave her be… especially after what her mother saw him doing to her. The memories haunt her as the present day reminds her of just how trapped she is. Lex is still being harassed and tormented by Zach. Though she let him. She allowed him to do these things to her out of fear. Fear is a powerful weapon when wielded right. Lex is trying to move on and push Zach as far from her as she can. Her father even went and set her up with a man, Lucas. A forty something that would give her a steady life. Her father has hopes that she will take part in the family business but that isn't what she wants. (But then again, she doesn't know what she wants in my opinion.)

After dating for awhile he asked her to marry him. This does not please Zach. Lex had no longer gotten home from her proposal dinner then he was banging at her door. When he leaves her she is broken, hurting and in need of space she has to get away, away from him, her dad, just everything. But as she walks to the door with a bag full of clothes and money she gets surprise. One that makes the past meet the present and her world turn upside down. Rafe is at her door. Pissed off, holding a grudge and ready to take her from here. But not for the reasons she would hope.

Being a prisoner, made to suffer for the wrongdoings of the past is one thing but for Alex it's a means to an end, even if she doesn't know it. Rafe's anger and need for pain, tears and fear stems from 8 long years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. Alex is the reason behind those years. Her lies sent him to hell and for that alone she must pay. Thing is though as Rafe 'works her over' he gets off on it all but something else is happening here. Between the two of them. Alex, who has been head over heels for Rafe since she was 15 is now in his world. She deserves what he has planned for her. But instead of being so scared of him, as she should be she's turned on my his exuberant need for dominance over her. The pain he causes her gets her so turned on that she may blow at any minute. And it's not until he pushes her too far not long after bringing her to the cabin that he finds this out. Alex tries to escape but that escape is vaulted when she face plants into the water surrounding the island.

Mason Island, Rafes family home is the last place she figured to be but since she has a rational fear of water and can't swim she's stuck. Rafe pulls her from the water and revives her but the worry showed in his eyes for the briefest of moments. She saw it. The d Rafe, the one she fell in love with is still in there. When Rafe gets her back inside he and Jax (his ex-cell mate and now current roommate and friend) tie her down and Rafe spanks her with a wooden paddle. Um, you'd think the pain and power he was letting off would worry her but it doesn't. She's so turned on by it that when he decides to take her right then and there she is begging for release. Needless to say they are both a little f*cked up. And Jax, well he's right there with them. Her getting spanked turned him on as much as it did Rafe. But as time passes and Rafe uses pain and torture to get what he wants things take another turn. Rafe wants to know why she did it, why she sent him to jail for raping her when he'd never touched her.

Duh duh duh... It's all Zach's fault. As usual the cunt of a step-brother had been the one to hurt her. And when he fingered Rafe as the one who had 'raped' Alex she couldn't say anything to contradict him. If she did he would kill Rafe. She couldn't have the man she loved hurt by him... so for the last either years she has let it stay a secret between them both. Zach has been assaulting her since then and the girl is ten shades of edged up beyond belief but Rafe's reaction to the details of what happened and why is what sets this into play. He wants to kill Zach (understandable! I'm with him on that) but can't say anything because of what he's been doing to her. Alex finally gets him to see that it's okay she likes him the way he is. She needs the pain. She needs him. But their happy little sick and dark world get turned upside down when Zach seeks Rafe out. A massive fight breaks out and Rafe tries to get Alex to safety so he can deal with Zach but the m'effer gets the better of Rafe. The last thing Alex sees is Rafe's battered and bleeding body go into the water.

When Jax shows up and gets Rafe (who had managed to pull himself to shore) into a boat and to help he wakes up... Broken. He has no memory of the last eight years... no memories of jail, his father dying or what he'd spent the last few weeks doing to Alex... Or even the fact that Zach has Alex. It's all just gone.
