I was on my own.
My friend, my coach, my lover - Marc - was lost to me. And worse, if I wanted to keep playing toward the World Championship, I would face him across a poker table sooner or later.
Could I win against him at our game, when I'd lost the only thing I wanted from him?
What will be the final outcome?
***Surrender the Bet is FINAL part of Full Tilt Billionaire serial series. It is not a standalone. You must read the other 4 before this one***
Her sharp tone arrested my fevered planning and made me look at her, really look, for the first time. Her expression was tragic, the corners of her mouth turned down and tears sparkling in her eyes. They’d changed color, as they always did when she was upset. No gold flecks, only the deepest blue-gray from the center to the outside of her irises. My heart skipped a beat and in two long strides I was with her, wrapping my arms around her and pulling her close.
“Baby,” I choked. “I’m so sorry. I can’t believe I let this happen. I’ll make it right, I promise.”
Tara broke down. Her tears soaked through my thin undershirt immediately as her thin body shook in my arms. God, how much weight had she lost? I hadn’t noticed before, but she was rail-thin. What had I done to my gorgeous girl? I wrapped her closer in my arms and bent to kiss the top of her head. Just then, she lifted her head to look at me and I found her lips instead.
With a longing I didn’t know I had in me, I devoured her mouth with mine. She had to know, before I gave her up forever, how much she meant to me. Fuck, I didn’t even know myself, until too late. What had started as a business arrangement now had my heart tied up in it. And it must be my karma for treating all those other women as playthings, that I was about to lose her.
Tara’s hands crept around my waist and under my shirt, sliding their way upward until the shirt was bunched under my arms and I understood she wanted it off. I pulled away briefly to strip it off, before clutching her to me again. Her soft hands played along the muscles of my back, which rippled with pleasure as her nails scratched lightly. When I moaned, she dug the nails of both hands into my skin.
I was barely aware of having uttered her name, but she pulled away from me, eyes blazing, and turned her back to me. Momentarily confused, I got it when she swept her hair up with one hand and pointed to the zipper in the back of her dress with the other. From somewhere in a mind-fog, I observed my trembling hand take the tab and pull the zipper down, revealing her creamy skin from neck to well below her waist with nothing under the dress.
I drew my breath in, slowly, as my body responded to her intentions. Hope gave way to assurance as I pushed the straps of the dress away from her shoulders and gently turned her, allowing the dress to slip to the floor. Standing naked before me except for a wisp of an undergarment that barely covered her mound, Tara gave me a tremulous smile and I was undone. I reached to cup one perfect breast and then the other and then, God help me, fell to my knees to worship her.
“Marc, no, get up, please,” she whispered.
I grasped her waist with both hands and pulled myself upright, then swept her into my arms before depositing her on the bed and following her there on hands and knees. As I straddled her, I looked down to find her eyes shining up at me.
“Make love to me, Marc.”
She reached for my neck and pulled me down to her breasts. It had been so long—too long—since I’d had Tara. She made it plain that she wanted slow and tender lovemaking, and I tried, I really did. But her passion lit a response in me I could only call caveman, and the more she responded, the more I couldn’t hold back.
First, thanks to the author, Jessa Jacob’s for providing me with a copy of this installment for an honest review. Secondly… WHY DOES IT HAVE TO END?!?!? (sighs) I loved this series, installment after installment after installment...and now it’s all gone.. (sniffles) I grew to admire Tara, yes she is a character in a book but really the chick is the epitome of the sexy geek and well.. that’s just hot. And bless her she didn’t put up with Marc’s shit. She’s a sexy bad-ass.
**small spoiler alert**
So, Marc is still an ass. A big surprise? No, he has his family all but telling him when he can have a shit and going along with it. No he isn’t happy about it but instead of manning up he is being a pussy. His father’s given him a choice. Marry someone the family approves of or Tara gets axed. So instead of saying “f you old man” he cowers and starts looking over the bimbos they agreed upon. Dude, man the F up!! (bangs my head) So, he gets to take his trollup to the games he attends and knows that Tara will be there to see him and his tart. If I were her I would have found someone to put on my arm too. Paybacks a bitch.
As they head to the big one, the big Poker Championship we start to see a Marc that is a little different than before. Not much, he is still a piece of gum on the bottom of his father’s shoe but he makes an effort to speak to Tara to warn her that she may be in danger. What’s new though, right? Well when he gets a call from his douche bag brother about what happened in Vienne Marc makes a choice to warn Tara. At least he doesn’t leave her to the wolves. This time anyhow. Tara at first isn’t wanting to hear it. The fact that his family is trying to ruin her life only makes things clearer for her. (I think.) She is trying to get on with the game but then as always Marc is in her way. Or is he really trying to help? he’s trying to help for one. He knows her life is more important to him than he can admit.
When the cops show up and ‘question’ Marc they find Tara with him. What happens next is something both special and has me finally saying, “Thank you for getting off the shittastic ride you were on buttercup!” Marc finally manned up in a way that should be able to keep him and Tara out of harm's way… then again, you never really now.
Again, I loved this series. So sad now. I want more. Finally got to see Marc be the bigger man and now it’s over… but I can see myself re-reading this over and over again. Its got so many little parts that add to new bigger parts and I swear these two characters are very hot together. Just. Frigging. Hot! (thuds) Maybe if I beg Jessa.. in the future we can have more of these two.. (crosses my fingers)
Many thanks to the author, who provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is the last chapter in the serial series Full Tilt Billionaire.
Noooooo, I don’t want this series to end! **cries** This has been a great little ride right from the start. The action has been interesting and the characters complex and engaging. I’m completely ignorant of how poker is played, but the poker aspect of the story never got me lost in technical details. Tara’s amazing talent comes to its full realization under Marc’s coaching, turning her from a hit and run card shark into a stylish professional player who is not to be taken lightly.
When we last left Marc and Tara in Surrender the bet Marc had handed his nuts over to “the family” and allowed them to not only break him and Tara up, but assign him a fiance that gives him the hives. They threatened to kill Tara outright, and he caved with barely a whimper of protest. He is “allowed” to gamble again now, and know it won’t be long before he has to face Tara across a table. Tara is drifting, at a loss as to what to do. She continues on the poker tournament alone, and when she faces Marc she is determined to beat him at his own game. She didn’t realize that the family was making him marry - she thought the woman with him was just some random chick. While that was a slap to the face, the truth was worse. When he told her that he was going to marry Sonia - I could just see the heartbroken look on her face.
They meet again at the Grand Championship in Jersey, where things change for them rapidly. Marc is hit with three big pieces of news in a row, one of which has him hunting Tara down to warn her. Her limited involvement in his family’s shady deals may be coming back to haunt them both. They have already threatened her life - now law enforcement wants to talk to both of them. Tara has no illusions about how that may go for her. Scared and confused, she turns up at his door looking for answers. But these two are like magnets, and they get back together - for one last night, they both think. The time apart has caused Marc to realize just how much Tara means to him, and their reunion is both sweet and bittersweet.
The next morning they are awakened by a banging on the door - the FBI is in the hallway. What happens next was not a complete surprise, but Marc’s reaction was. (Big awwww moment, it was very sweet) The series ends on a happy note, but this reader has to wonder just what could happen next……
Maybe one day the author will let us find out!
About the Author:
Like you, I’m a reader. When I read a good story with characters I can connect with, my everyday existence fades into the background as I enter a world that may contain exotic locations, adventure and excitement. And, if I can be totally honest with you, in my favorite stories I can fall in love for a while with an impossibly gorgeous guy who is the best lover imaginable.
So, maybe it won’t come as a surprise that in my books you’ll find hot alpha male book-boyfriends, sassy heroines who are much more clever and beautiful than I am, and stories I hope will make you laugh and cry while reading them, as I did while writing them. Oh, and some scenes you may want to role-play with your lover.
