It is not a peaceful time in the Algardis Empire. War is raging between the mages and seventeen-year-old Sara Fairchild will be right in the middle of it.

She just doesn't know it yet.

Sara is the daughter of a disgraced imperial commander, executed for desertion. Sara is also the best duelist and hand-to-hand combatant in Sandrin. She lives quietly with her family’s shame but when challenged about her family’s honor, her opponent inevitably loses.

On the night she finds out her father’s true last actions, she takes the Mercenary Guilds’ vows to serve in the emperor’s army. Using her quick wits and fierce fighting skills, she earns a spot in the first division.

There she discovers secrets the mages on both sides would prefer stay hidden. Dark enemies hunt her and soon it's not just Sara questioning the motivation behind this war.

While fighting mages, blackmailing merchants and discovering new friends, Sara comes across something she’s never had before - passion. The question is - can she fight for her empress against a mage who might unwittingly claim her heart?

This is year one of the Initiate Wars. Sara is hoping it doesn't become the year she dies.

Barb's Review:
blades of magic.jpg

First off, thank you to YA Bound Book Tours for introducing me to Terah Edun and this story. I received an audio copy of this book to read/listen to from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I can say I was enthralled by the second page. It literally starts out making you go O.o and ends with a O.O (laughs) I was afraid it would be a little out of my league but I am very pleased to say I enjoyed it a helluva lot. I think having it in the audio version brought it to life much more than just reading it would have done. It’s literally a world all to itself. Sara is not only a warrior, she is disgraced by something her father had supposedly done and been executed for. So what do you do when you are the best duelist and hand-to-hand combatant in Sandrin? If you are Sara Fairchild you take a job working for someone despite the fact that it could get ya killed for it. But Sara is a bad mamajama like that. She flies by the seat of her pants and she literally would rather gut ya than be bothered with you. I mean she is a battle mage, its what they do.

There is an little mix of emotions that cover this book. Whether you are reading or listening you have an opportunity to get lost in the world as it's laid out before you. There are a lot of things going on at once in a few parts of the book. But for me as a listener it was groovy. Sorry but no other word could be used.. it was just groovy. Not Austin Powers groovy but like Scooby Doo groovy. it seemed every time Sara was turning a corner trouble was waiting for her. Now she is on this quest of sorts to find out what really happened to her father. Why he was executed. While out looking for answers Sara gets a glimpse of who she can call a friend and what she needs to do to get her answers. There is more to this than we can see and for Sara it’s a hunt to the death if she doesn't watch her back and keep her head on straight. One slip and she would end up like her father. So how can one girl, one battle mage take on the empress, a war and an unknow quest all at the same time? By going balls deep into it with a fire that only she has within her. Its time to put what has happened in the past together with the present and make a future she deserves.
