The Independents II:

When Ben Towers receives a lucrative publishing contract for his debut novel, it is most definitely a dream come true.

But there's just one problem.

His former best friend, Josh, takes to social media claiming that the idea for the book was stolen by Ben. Now Josh will publish the true manuscript as an Indie author.

The controversy drives interest in the book through the roof, and although this pleases Ben's publisher, they ask him to confirm absolutely that the book is indeed his idea, as lawyers are now necessary.

When Josh is shut down in all his avenues, the pathway to the release event is clear. Or so Ben thinks…

It was a dismissal and Ben knew it. He had no idea what to do to make her smile, so he just left and returned to his desk and the fresh pile of hardbacks for him to sign. At least there was one thing he could focus on that required no effort. He picked up book after book, signing his name in what was now a well-rehearsed move. So rehearsed, he almost didn’t see the neatly folded slip of paper in one of the last ones. He opened it to find a printout of a news site post.

“Publishers to Sue” Thompson Publishers today announced they would take legal action against Joshua Williams. Mr Williams has been vocal of late on social media regarding Thompson’s much anticipated new release The Conquest, with accusations that the idea for the book has been plagiarised. “We at Thompson’s take any suggestion of trickery or dishonesty very seriously,” Head of Promotions Denise Houseman said. “The accusations made are not only false, but also insulting. After repeated warnings, our lawyers have been contacted and we will be seeking damages.” Mr Williams has since gone into a social media blackout and has been unavailable for comment.

Ben smiled. This must have been put in by Denise as a sneaky reminder that the pest had been taken care of. There was more on the other side of the paper. He flipped it over and he became suddenly aware of his heartbeat, pulsing in his temples.

“What the fuck?” he whispered to himself. He picked up his phone and dialled Denise’s number. “Hi, it’s Ben. Sorry to bother you, but where did you get the batch of books that I’ve got now?”

“From the printers, silly.”

“The same printers as last time?”

“Yep, we only use the one. Why? Is there a problem with the font?”

“No, I…” Ben looked at the flip side of the page again. “Had anyone seen it before you?”

“No, that printing press is exclusive to us, it gets locked after all the books are printed and boxed. I was the only one there to pick up your books and the box was sealed. What’s the problem?”

Someone had written in bold blue marker, WE KNOW. Ben swallowed. “Nothing.”

Author Bio:

I love writing adult paranormal fiction. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts....oh my. I've been writing since I was 11 but I've always been a dreamer......often getting caught staring off into space as I created stories in my mind.

One of my recent stories, Night Walker (Undeadly Secrets Series Book 1), won the 2017 Golden Stake Award at the International Vampire Film and Arts Festival held in Transylvania annually. I'm still quite chuffed about walking away with it after facing some great contenders.

The Fourth book in what some refer to as The Undeadly Secrets Saga will release in early 2018. I also have a short story thriller series, The Independents, and will be branching out into other genres in the coming year.

My favorite activities include spending time with family, dragging my forever patient wife to watch my beloved St George Illawarra Dragons, popping into the movies for the latest blockbusters, going to the gym for my dream body. Or just a body. Anything, really.

My beautiful wife and I welcomed our first child into the world in 2017. My fans have declared him the Prince of Speerverse and claim he seems to take after me in his want to build the tension as high as possible...making us and our loved ones wait 3 long days for him to make his entrance.  My wife and I live with the love of our lives in Sydney, Australia; the setting for the majority of my works.
